Concrete Monster

I write about my mom a lot.  So today i decided to talk about my dad a little.

It was the spring of my junior year of college.  I was lamenting to my mom on the phone that I had no idea what i was going to do for a summer job.  I did want to come home for the summer.  I didn't want to work at camp again.  I knew that all the summer retail jobs would be taken by the time I got back to Minnesota.  I knew I needed a summer job.  During this phone call, i hear my dad in the background, "tell her she can come work for me!"  I laughed, Mom laughed, I think my dad even laughed.  I hung up the phone, after being reassured that it would all work out.

I was telling some of my friends about the phone call.  "Was your dad serious?  you could make a ton of money!"
"and get buff!"
"and tan!"

I suppose I should back up here a minute.  My dad owns his own business.  He is a concrete contractor.  My little brother has been working for my dad forever.  I worked for my dad around home, doing chores, farm stuff mainly.  but i had never been "on the job" with him.  My dad does brick, block, and stone work, concrete slabs, and lots of syrofoam basements.

I called my mom back a few days later,"Was dad serious in saying I could work for him?"
"umm, i don't know, my guess is probably."

I called my dad a few days later, "would you seriously give me a job?"
"sure, lets see how it works out."

Then it hit me.  was i crazy?  I was going to work in the hot sun, and shovel concrete all summer.  but it was a job, and i would make good money. but i was not the most fit person in the world. and i knew that if it wasn't Dad's way, it was no way...well, it was worth a try.

little brother tried to get me fired in the first couple of weeks (though he denies it.)  I cut a lot of rebar, tied a lot of rebar, shoveled a lot of concrete, did a lot of math in my head (trying to figure out how much rebar i needed to cut) and was an overall gopher for the whole crew.  I was the only woman around.  I got some funny looks from concrete truck drivers the first couple of weeks.

The biggest benefit from this job was the relationship I got to cultivate with my dad.  I learned quickly that the best way to be to work on time was to come with the boss.  We talked a lot, he told me lots of stories I had never heard before, and he was almost always paitent with me when I had questions.  And in the end, I think he was proud of me.  and that was huge for me.  I always knew my dad was proud of me, but this time, he was proud of me for something that was directly involved in his life.

It was probably one of the best summer vacations I ever had.  Granted, I also picked up some great language, drank too much beer, and got a couple of nasty sunburns.  but i wouldn't trade my expirence as a concrete monster for anything.

My dad has said if I ever need a job again, he'd hire me.  Good to know I have a back up plan, but I don't think I want to do it for a living.

Peace!
